In the heart of the Kanawinka Volcanic Plain, one hour from the coast and half an hour from the Grampians National Park, Pierrepoint Cellar Door is in the midst of a tourist’s wonderland.

The Grampians Peaks Trail – a multi-night trekking experience linking the Grampians’ northern reaches with Dunkeld in the south – is poised to become one of Victoria’s most significant nature-based tourism experiences after confirmation of $10 million of Federal Government and $19 million of State Government funding.
Spotting Volcanoes
Journalist Don Fuchs & retired Geomorphologist Peter Dixon met at Pierrepoint Cellar Door at the foot of Mt Pierrepoint, and produced a fascinating description of one of the finest volcanic plains in the world. Covering more than 19,000 sq kms from Melbourne in the east to Mt Gambier in the west, the Kanawinka Geopark takes the tourist on a journey through the far South west of Victoria and over the border to the far south east of South Australia.
Within the borders of Kanawinka are 58 significant geosites, including the Blue Lake, Tower Hill, Red Rock, Mt Noorat, Princess Margaret Rose Caves, Wannon Falls, the Petrified Forest and the Coonawarra. In total, the area covers 26,910 square kilometers, making it the largest volcanic plain in the world.
